Basic Adoption Requirements
- You must be at least 18 years of age, before contacting Swine Society to adopt a pig.
- Are you allowed to own a pig pet? County and city laws can restrict pig pets in may different ways. If you need help determining whether or not you are allowed to own a pig pet in your neighborhood, contact your local zoning department for more information about having a pig as a pet in your area.
- A fenced yard makes for a happy piggy! A securely fenced yard is imperative to a happy pig pet. Pigs need a place where they can spend some time eating grass, rooting, playing in a pool, and lounging around. Though your pig may prefer to spend most of their time indoors, it is very important they have ample time outside and for this, there is nothing that compares to a yard.
- Volunteer for Swine Society. Our volunteer program is centered around familiarizing people with pigs as pets. Our volunteers learn basic pig husbandry including correct diet, bathing, teeth and hoof care, diagnosing illnesses and many other basics needed to help your pet live comfortably. The majority of the time volunteers spend here is loving and doing activities with the pigs, to ensure their continued interest in people, to desensitize wary animals of sharp movements and people, and to maintain the focus of the pigs with people. Volunteering is not mandatory, however, it is highly suggested for people who have never had a pig pet and do not have a veterinary reference with regard to their pig pet adoption.
